Trump goes on confusing rant about Melania and details putting hand ‘on certain part of her body’ during Board of Peace speech

During a February 19 address at the Board of Peace inaugural meeting in Washington, President Trump revisited a viral moment from his past—the day an escalator abruptly stopped beneath him and First Lady Melania at the United Nations headquarters. The speech blended prepared remarks with characteristic unscripted tangents.

While greeting international representatives, Trump singled out Paraguay’s president, Santiago Peña Palacios, describing him as “young” and “handsome” in an offbeat aside that drew attention for its unusual tone. He then shifted to discussing his generally positive relationship with the United Nations, despite a few memorable mishaps.

Trump recalled a prior UN appearance where his teleprompter malfunctioned, framing it as part of a broader pattern of inconveniences. This led naturally into the widely circulated escalator incident from September, when video footage showed the mechanism stopping suddenly as the couple stepped onto it.

Initially, the administration treated the malfunction seriously. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt publicly called for an immediate investigation, suggesting concern about whether the stoppage had been intentional. The response reflected genuine unease about the incident.

During this recent speech, however, Trump appeared more willing to joke about the episode. He described steadying himself by placing his hand on his wife while avoiding a fall, adding that she had been “in the proper location” to prevent him from losing balance—a remark delivered in his signature improvisational style.

The president also referenced a documentary centered on the first lady, titled Melania, noting its strong audience reception despite mixed critical response. Meanwhile, the UN previously explained that the escalator likely stopped because a safety mechanism was triggered, possibly by a videographer positioned behind the couple.

What was once treated as a serious disruption has since become, in the president’s retelling, a moment of levity. The incident now serves as lighthearted material woven into speeches marked by digressions and unexpected commentary.
