Michigan Church Attack: What We Know About the Suspect, the Victims, and Trump’s Response
On September 28, 2025, a peaceful Sunday service at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc Township, Michigan, was violently attacked. A man drove a truck into the church, opened fire on the congregation, and set the building ablaze.
The suspect was identified as Thomas Jacob Sanford, a 40-year-old former U.S. Marine from Burton. The assault left the community in shock and resulted in a tragic loss of life.
Authorities have confirmed four fatalities: two from gunshot wounds and two others discovered after the fire was extinguished. At least eight more people, including children, were injured, with one person reported in critical condition. The church was declared a total loss.
Witnesses described a scene of panic and fear. One long-time member recounted fearing for her life, unsure if she would escape the violence.
Investigators are searching for a motive. They are examining Sanford’s home and digital devices. Sanford served in the Marine Corps from 2004 to 2008, completing a combat tour in Iraq and receiving several medals.
