Donald Trump called out for forgetting $2,000 promise he made to Americans

President Donald Trump is facing criticism after appearing to forget his promise of $2,000 rebate checks to Americans.

For months, the 79-year-old leader has floated the idea of distributing $2,000 checks funded by revenue from his trade tariffs, suggesting that many Americans could receive payments by mid-2026.

Trump claimed the U.S. earns so much from tariffs that he could provide each citizen with a $2,000 cheque, though there is little indication the plan will happen soon.

During a recent Oval Office interview with The New York Times, reporters Katie Rogers and Tyler Pager asked him about the rebate checks. Trump seemed confused, responding: “I did do that? When did I do that?” He then referenced a previous payment to the military instead.

When pressed about timing, Trump said the tariff revenue is substantial and promised checks “toward the end of the year.” He also stated he does not believe Congressional approval would be necessary.

Trump initially publicized the $2,000 dividend in November, posting on Truth Social that tariff revenue would allow him to pay Americans while highlighting record economic gains, including high stock prices, strong 401(k) balances, and reduced inflation.

Social media users responded with frustration, mocking Trump for seemingly forgetting his own promise and questioning the feasibility of the rebate. Critics highlighted a pattern of making large public pledges while failing to follow through, emphasizing the gap between Trump’s statements and actual outcomes.
