Zohran Mamdani’s US citizenship at threat of being ‘stripped’ by Trump

Following his historic election as New York City’s first Muslim mayor, Zohran Mamdani is facing threats from Donald Trump and allied Republicans. They have suggested he could be arrested, deported, and stripped of his U.S. citizenship.

Mamdani, a 34-year-old Democratic socialist, was born in Uganda and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 2018. The confrontation intensified after he pledged to resist federal immigration raids in the city.

Trump responded by telling reporters, “Well then, we’ll have to arrest him.” He also speculated, without evidence, that Mamdani might be in the country illegally.

In Congress, Republicans have called for an investigation into his citizenship. They allege he concealed support for terrorism, citing a rap lyric, and communist ties due to his democratic socialist affiliation.

Legal experts state that denaturalization is extremely rare and requires clear proof of fraud. They found no credible evidence that Mamdani lied on his application.

Mamdani has condemned the threats as an attack on democracy and an attempt to intimidate immigrant communities. He vows he will not change his policies.

The dispute has escalated into a national symbol of the tensions surrounding immigration, citizenship, and the limits of presidential power against political opponents.
