Kate Middleton shares how chemotherapy affected her body in sad update as doctors warn of serious side effects

The Princess of Wales visited Colchester Hospital’s wellbeing garden on 2 July, where she planted ‘Catherine’s Rose’ in support of cancer recovery. During the visit, Kate Middleton, 43, shared an emotional update on her ongoing journey since completing chemotherapy.

Kate revealed her cancer diagnosis in March 2024 and underwent preventative chemotherapy before announcing her remission in January this year. She described remission as a “relief” but emphasized that recovery remains her focus.

Speaking candidly, Kate explained that the post-treatment phase has been challenging. “You put on a brave face during treatment, but afterwards, it’s really difficult,” she said. “You’re no longer under medical care but still can’t function as you once did.”

She highlighted the misconception that recovery is immediate, noting that adjusting to a “new normal” takes time. Last June, Kate had also spoken openly about the physical toll of chemotherapy, describing fluctuating “good days and bad days.”

Chemotherapy affects both cancer cells and healthy, fast-growing cells, leading to side effects like fatigue, nausea, and a weakened immune system. However, healthy cells can often repair themselves over time.

Kate’s openness about her experience aims to raise awareness and support for others facing similar challenges. Her visit underscored the importance of wellbeing spaces like the hospital garden in aiding recovery.

For those affected by cancer, support is available through Macmillan’s Cancer Support Line at 0808 808 00 00. Kate’s journey continues to inspire many, showing resilience and hope amid adversity.
