World’s oldest living woman, 116, reveals a surprising secret to her long life
Ethel Caterham, aged 116, is now the world’s oldest person. Born in 1909, she has lived through seminal historical events, from the sinking of the Titanic to the rise of the internet.
Longevity runs in her family, with one sister having lived to 104. Ethel’s own remarkable life began with an adventure, working as an au pair for a military family in British India as a young woman.
She later married British Army Major Norman Caterham in 1933. Their life together included postings in Hong Kong, where Ethel founded a nursery, and Gibraltar, where they started their family.
Her secret to a long life is simple yet profound: “Never arguing with anyone. I listen and I do what I like.” She has also shown incredible resilience, having made a full recovery from COVID-19 at the age of 110.
Ethel became the UK’s oldest person in 2022 and the world’s oldest in 2025. Her milestone has been recognized by King Charles III, who sent her a letter and has met her in person.
She lived independently for most of her life, driving until she was 97 and playing bridge well past 100. She now resides in a care home in Surrey.
More than a record-holder, Ethel Caterham is an inspiration. Her journey is a testament to a life filled with resilience, spirit, and a remarkable ability to navigate history’s changes.
