Beloved television judge Frank Caprio, celebrated for his compassionate courtroom demeanor on “Caught in Providence,” has passed away at the age of 88. His family confirmed his death on August 20, 2025, following a courageous fight with pancreatic cancer.
Even from his hospital bed, Caprio shared a final, hopeful message with his fans, smiling and offering a thumbs-up. This gesture was a fitting farewell from the man millions knew as “The Nicest Judge in the World,” who became famous for his warmth and his practice of offering second chances.
His family remembered him as a devoted family man and a respected judge. Rhode Island leaders, including Senate President Valarie Lawson, stated he embodied the state’s spirit and inspired global acts of kindness by seeing the humanity in everyone.
Caprio first disclosed his diagnosis in December 2023. He faced his illness with remarkable optimism, vowing to fight as hard as he could. He endured an arduous treatment regimen, including chemotherapy and radiation, which he found debilitating but met with deep courage.
His journey was one of true perseverance. Born to Italian-American fruit sellers in Providence, he rose from shining shoes to earning a law degree. He began his public service career on the city council in 1962 before presiding over the municipal court.
His generosity extended far beyond the bench. He established the Filomena Fund to help with traffic fines and supported numerous charities, including food banks and scholarship funds, leaving a profound mark on his community.
