Court documents suggest a relative of the Florida teen who died on a Carnival Cruise could face charges
The tragic death of 18-year-old Anna Kepner on a Carnival cruise ship has taken a new turn, with the FBI now investigating a family member in connection with the incident. The high school cheerleader from Ohio was found dead aboard the Carnival Horizon on November 7, 2025.
Recent court filings from a 2024 divorce case have revealed the investigation’s focus. Anna’s stepmother, Shauntel Hudson, disclosed in a motion that the FBI is considering criminal charges against one of her minor children. The filing requested a delay in family court proceedings due to this “extremely sensitive and severe circumstance.”
According to reports, a maid discovered Anna’s body in her cabin, concealed under a bed and covered with life jackets and a blanket. The teen had reportedly been feeling unwell and returned to her room early the night before she was found.
Authorities are examining evidence including CCTV footage, passenger key card data, and Anna’s cellphone. Carnival Cruise Line has confirmed it is fully cooperating with the federal investigation.
Anna’s father, Chris Kepner, expressed the family’s profound grief, stating they are trying to “sit still and wait for answers.” The entire family, who were on vacation together, were detained for questioning following the incident.
Anna is remembered as a happy, straight-A student with a bright future who had taken steps to join the military. Her family described her as a bubbly and energetic young woman who loved cheerleading, boating, and scuba diving.
