Truth behind why Epstein files weren’t released under the Biden administration
Following the signing of the Epstein Files Transparency Act by Donald Trump, a political debate has emerged. Many Republicans are questioning why the files weren’t released during the Biden administration.
Representative Tim Burchett echoed this, stating Democrats had the files for years and blocked their release. The pressure to release the extensive Department of Justice files on Jeffrey Epstein has been mounting.
Epstein was charged with sex trafficking in 2019 but died by suicide before his trial. His criminal history, however, dates back to a 2005 investigation and a 2008 plea deal.
The reason for the delay in release was not political, but legal. Investigative journalist Julie K. Brown clarified the case was an open criminal investigation during the Biden term.
She explained that an open grand jury and ongoing appeals in Ghislaine Maxwell’s conviction legally prevented the files’ public release. Releasing information could have jeopardized the active investigation.
The situation changed when Trump’s Department of Justice reviewed and officially closed the case in July. This legal closure paved the way for the files’ potential release under the new act.
While most files will be made public, some containing evidence of child abuse will appropriately remain withheld to protect victims.
