Donald Trump agrees to meet Zohran Mamdani – but still makes a dig
Former US President Donald Trump will meet with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani on Friday, November 21st. The meeting is set to take place at the Oval Office.
Trump announced the meeting on his Truth Social platform. However, he again incorrectly referred to Mayor Mamdani as a “Communist,” continuing a pattern of mislabeling his political ideology.
Mamdani has publicly identified as a democratic socialist, not a communist. He has corrected this mischaracterization on multiple occasions, including in his victory speech after being elected.
The mayor made history in his election, becoming New York City’s first Muslim mayor, the first of South Asian heritage, and the first born in Africa. His platform focuses on affordability for housing and transportation.
Experts confirm that Mamdani’s policies do not align with communism. A Stanford professor noted he does not advocate for a centrally planned economy or a single-party state, which are core communist tenets.
Analysts suggest Trump’s repeated use of the term “communist” is a political tactic. This “red scare” strategy has long been used to attack political opponents, particularly those with progressive or socialist leanings.
Mamdani has defined his democratic socialism as seeking a better distribution of wealth through democratic processes. This contrasts with communism’s revolutionary vision of class struggle and public ownership of all property.
