Tragic Bus Collision Claims 37 Lives – What We Know

A horrific bus crash in Peru on November 12, 2025, resulted in the deaths of 37 people. The accident occurred near Arequipa when the bus veered off a remote highway. It then plummeted 650 feet into a deep ravine.

The bus was traveling on the Pan-American Highway South, a notoriously dangerous and winding mountain road. It was operated by the Llamosas company on its route from Chala to Arequipa. Officials state the catastrophe began when the bus collided with a pickup truck, causing it to careen off the cliff.

The death toll was severe, with 37 of the 60 passengers killed. Twenty-five people were injured, including three children, and were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Remarkably, both the bus and truck drivers survived the devastating incident.

First responders worked through the night on recovery efforts. Thirty-six victims were pronounced dead at the scene, with a thirty-seventh later dying in a hospital. The bus driver has been taken into custody as the investigation proceeds.

This tragedy highlights the perilous state of Peru’s road infrastructure. Many highways are known for poor maintenance, a lack of signage, and dangerous driving conditions. The Ocoña district mayor confirmed this particular stretch is considered deadly.

The Pan-American Highway, while the world’s longest motorable road, is now a source of immense grief for the victims’ families. This event adds to Peru’s alarming road safety record, which saw over 3,300 traffic fatalities in 2022 alone.

Our deepest condolences are with all those affected by this profound tragedy.
