Trump administration makes major call on Jeffrey Epstein’s associate Ghislaine Maxwell after she appealed conviction

Ghislaine Maxwell, convicted associate of Jeffrey Epstein, is set to remain in prison until 2037 after her 20-year sentence for sex trafficking minors was upheld. The 63-year-old was found guilty in 2021 of luring teenage girls for Epstein, with charges including conspiracy and transporting minors for illegal sexual activity.

Maxwell’s legal team has repeatedly argued that her conviction should be overturned, claiming she was covered by a non-prosecution agreement between Epstein and the U.S. government. Despite multiple attempts, all her appeals for a retrial have been denied by federal courts.

On July 14, the Department of Justice urged the Supreme Court to dismiss her latest appeal. Maxwell’s attorneys had previously contended that prosecuting her violated the agreement made with Epstein.

Her lawyer, David Oscar Markus, suggested that former President Trump might oppose the DOJ’s stance, emphasizing the importance of honoring deals. He called Maxwell’s imprisonment unfair, given the alleged broken promise.

Sigrid McCawley, a lawyer for Epstein’s victims, applauded the DOJ’s decision, stating Maxwell deserves no protection for her crimes. She emphasized Maxwell’s role in Epstein’s sex-trafficking ring and argued she must face accountability.

The Supreme Court is unlikely to overturn the DOJ’s recommendation, especially given Maxwell’s failed appeals. Legal experts suggest her chances of a successful appeal are slim.

Maxwell’s case remains a high-profile example of the fallout from Epstein’s crimes, with her sentence reflecting the severity of her actions. Her imprisonment continues to draw attention as legal battles persist.
