Nearly Unanimous Senate Decision

In a remarkable display of unity, the U.S. Senate passed a bill targeting foreign influence in American elections with an overwhelming 88-2 vote. This decisive action surprised many, including former President Donald Trump.

The new legislation introduces strict regulations to safeguard the electoral process. It mandates full transparency for foreign funds used in political advertisements and prohibits undisclosed foreign lobbying.

The bill also establishes severe consequences for violations. These include multi-year prison sentences and the seizure of assets from those who break the law.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer emphasized the significance of the move, stating, “This is bigger than politics. It’s about protecting the American people’s voice.” The rare bipartisan support included many of Trump’s loyalists.

Reports indicate that classified briefings revealing aggressive new tactics by foreign actors to sway U.S. politics helped secure the wide margin of support. A former White House aide revealed that Trump “was blindsided” by the bipartisan consensus.

Only two senators opposed the bill, expressing concerns that it could infringe upon free speech rights. The vast majority, however, agreed that such legislative action was long overdue.

The bill now moves to the House of Representatives, where it is also expected to receive strong bipartisan backing. It could potentially reach President Biden’s desk to be signed into law within weeks, marking a historic step against foreign interference.
