NTSB Shares Early Report on Kentucky UPS Plane Crash Investigation
A cargo plane crash near Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport has resulted in multiple fatalities. Federal investigators confirmed the left engine of a UPS MD-11F detached during takeoff, causing the aircraft to crash just beyond the runway on November 4, 2025.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) reported the plane lifted off but then struck structures off airport property. The separation of the 5-ton engine caused massive damage, with debris potentially damaging a second engine.
Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg confirmed 12 deaths, which include the three crew members and nine individuals on the ground. Fifteen families have sought information at a designated assistance center.
Despite an intense post-crash fire, investigators successfully recovered the plane’s flight recorders. Officials are hopeful data can be retrieved, and CCTV footage corroborates the engine detached during the takeoff roll.
Dozens of emergency agencies responded to the scene. The crash impacted two nearby businesses, and authorities expanded a shelter-in-place order for surrounding neighborhoods as a precaution.
The community has reacted with shock and grief. Social media is filled with messages of support and prayers for the victims, as well as questions about the cause of the mechanical failure.
The NTSB and FAA are conducting a joint investigation into the crash. The focus remains on determining the precise cause of the engine failure as the community mourns the tragic loss.
