Federal Investigation Targets AOC Over Alleged Hiring of Undocumented Worker
Federal authorities have reportedly initiated an investigation into Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The probe centers on allegations that she knowingly employed an undocumented immigrant on her staff and was involved in activities that helped others evade Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
According to former acting ICE Director Tom Homan, the Department of Homeland Security is reviewing evidence. The focus is on a staffer, believed to be undocumented, who may have assisted others in avoiding ICE detection. Homan stated the case is being examined for potential obstruction of enforcement operations.
The individual at the center of the investigation is Diego de la Vega, who served as Ocasio-Cortez’s Deputy Communications Director. Reports indicate he held this role and previous positions with other Democratic lawmakers despite his undocumented immigration status. De la Vega voluntarily left the U.S. in March.
The federal probe was reportedly triggered by a formal referral from Homan to the Department of Justice. This followed reports that the congresswoman’s office hosted community seminars advising undocumented immigrants on how to protect themselves from ICE. Critics argue these sessions could constitute illegal obstruction.
If the allegations are proven, they could represent multiple violations of federal immigration law. These include harboring or employing unauthorized aliens and obstructing enforcement operations. Such violations could lead to ethics charges, civil penalties, or even criminal prosecution.
Ocasio-Cortez’s office has not yet issued a formal statement regarding the investigation. In the past, her aides have dismissed similar accusations as politically motivated attacks intended to “criminalize compassion.” The congresswoman is a well-known advocate for immigration reform.
While investigations of sitting lawmakers are uncommon, legal experts confirm they do occur. The next steps depend on the findings from ICE and the DOJ, which could range from referring the case to the House Ethics Committee to convening a federal grand jury. No charges have been filed at this time.
