Trump recalls last conversation he had with Charlie Kirk before his assassination
President Donald Trump has reflected on his final conversation with the late commentator Charlie Kirk, whom he considered a “very good friend.” Kirk was assassinated on September 10 while speaking at an event in Utah.
Trump praised Kirk as a patriot and a “martyr for truth and freedom.” The president revealed that Kirk had recently called to ask him to speak in Phoenix on very short notice. Trump joked that he had reminded Kirk, “I’m the President of the United States,” but usually ended up attending his events anyway.
Kirk’s body was flown back to Phoenix aboard Air Force Two. A memorial service is scheduled for Sunday at State Farm Stadium, which holds over 60,000 people. Trump announced he will attend and posthumously award Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Vice President JD Vance and his wife, who accompanied Kirk’s casket and widow back to Arizona, will also be present. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to attend as well, calling Kirk a “great young man” with enormous influence.
Kirk was the founder of the conservative youth organization Turning Point USA. He is survived by his wife, Erika, and their two children. Erika has vowed to continue her husband’s mission and legacy.
