At least 58 sh.ot, 8 kil.led in Chicago over Labor Day weekend as city rejects Trump’s help
A violent holiday weekend in Chicago saw at least 58 people shot, eight of them fatally, according to local reports. The shootings occurred as a political dispute over how to address the city’s crime escalated.
The incidents were largely unrelated, and police confirmed that no arrests have been made in the majority of cases. The victims included both men and women, though authorities have not yet released their identities.
This surge in violence coincides with a vow from Chicago’s mayor to resist President Trump’s proposed methods for combating crime. The President has suggested he might deploy the National Guard and other federal agents to the city.
In response, Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order on Saturday. This order expressly prohibits local police from cooperating with federal law enforcement counterparts.
The mayor stated his order ensures Chicago police will not work with federal agents or the National Guard on patrols, arrests, or immigration enforcement. He declared the president would not be allowed to “deputize” the city’s police force.
At a news conference, Mayor Johnson outlined his strong objections to federal intervention. He expressed concerns about seeing military tanks in streets, families separated, and residents disappeared into unmarked vans.
The White House swiftly dismissed the mayor’s order as a “publicity stunt.” A spokeswoman claimed Democrats were politicizing crime reduction and that communities would be safer if local leaders focused on solutions.
