US Embassy Hit by Missile as Trump Claims American Forces
Late Friday night, a missile struck the compound of the United States Embassy in Baghdad, intensifying concerns about rising instability in the region. The projectile landed within the heavily guarded Green Zone, an area that contains major government offices, diplomatic missions, and security headquarters. Initial images showed smoke rising near the embassy, but authorities had not yet confirmed casualties or the level of damage.
The strike occurred shortly after Donald Trump announced that American forces had launched a significant bombing mission targeting locations associated with Iran. According to reports, the operation focused on sites located on Kharg Island.
Kharg Island, positioned roughly 16 miles off Iran’s southern shoreline, plays a crucial role in the nation’s oil exports and overall energy trade. Although the mission targeted military-related facilities, Trump indicated that the operation intentionally avoided damaging the island’s vital oil infrastructure.
These developments are linked to a wider American military effort known as Operation Epic Fury. The campaign aims to weaken Iran’s military strength as well as the influence of allied militia groups operating throughout the Middle East.
In recent weeks, groups believed to be aligned with Iran have carried out drone and missile attacks against American bases and diplomatic sites in several countries, including Iraq. The attack on the Baghdad embassy appears to be another step in this growing pattern of retaliation.
Political shifts inside Iran have also heightened tensions. After the death of longtime Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, leadership reportedly passed to his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, who has expressed stronger and more confrontational positions.
Mojtba Khamenei warned that Iran would respond to losses from the conflict and suggested further retaliation could continue. Meanwhile, global attention is focused on the Strait of Hormuz, where any disruption could threaten energy supplies and deepen the crisis.
