Everything we know so far about National Guard shooting as suspect named
In a critical incident near the White House, two National Guard members were shot and critically injured. The attack occurred on the afternoon of November 26th just blocks from the White House, which was temporarily placed on lockdown as a precaution.
A single suspect, identified as 29-year-old Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, was taken into custody after being severely wounded. According to reports, the suspect used a handgun in the assault and was ultimately detained by a third Guard member.
Authorities have not yet formally identified the victims. Initial, incorrect reports from the West Virginia governor stated they had been killed, but the FBI later confirmed both were alive, though in critical condition.
President Donald Trump, who was away from the White House for the Thanksgiving holiday, responded to the attack on his Truth Social platform. He described the shooter as an “animal” and vowed the individual would “pay a very steep price.”
The investigation into the suspect’s motive is ongoing. Authorities are reportedly exploring all possibilities, including whether the shooting was a potential act of terror.
The incident took place at a busy intersection near the Farragut West Metro station. The suspect, who was shot four times during the confrontation, was transported to a hospital for treatment.
President Trump concluded his statement by expressing his support, saying, “God bless our Great National Guard, and all of our Military and Law Enforcement.” The situation is now secured as the investigation continues.
