Multiple people shot including National Guard members as White House goes into lockdown

Two National Guard members were shot just a few blocks from the White House in Washington, DC, prompting widespread confusion and concern.

West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey first stated that both Guardsmen had died but later retracted that claim, saying reports about their conditions were conflicting and that more information would follow.

Officials told the BBC that three people had been transported to the hospital, though the identity and status of the third victim remain unclear. Law enforcement also confirmed to CBS that the suspected shooter was injured, taken into custody, and transferred to a hospital.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the administration was monitoring the situation closely and that President Trump had been briefed. According to Reuters correspondent Jeff Mason, the White House went into lockdown shortly after.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem asked the public to pray for the injured Guardsmen. Trump, who is at his Palm Beach resort ahead of Thanksgiving, said on Truth Social that the attacker would “pay a very steep price,” praising the National Guard and law enforcement.

Reports indicate the shooting occurred around 2:20 p.m. ET near the entrance of the Farragut West Metro station at the busy intersection of 17th and I Street NW. The White House remains on lockdown as a precaution.

Due to the location of the shooting, the FAA temporarily suspended flights into Reagan National Airport. The National Guard said it was working with local police and emphasized that protecting its service members remains its highest priority.
