These comments were made during an Oval Office event about the 2026 FIFA World Cup. When asked about potential strikes in Mexico, Trump replied that doing “whatever we have to do to stop drugs” was acceptable to him.
He specifically mentioned the possibility of attacking cocaine factories in Colombia, emphasizing he would be “proud to do it” to save lives. However, he stopped short of announcing any formal decision or imminent action.
This rhetoric aligns with an ongoing US military operation, “Operation Southern Spear,” which has conducted numerous strikes on suspected drug-trafficking boats in the Caribbean and Pacific. The administration justifies this as a necessary measure against “narco-terrorist” networks.
The suggestion of cross-border strikes raises significant sovereignty concerns. Mexico has historically opposed any foreign military intervention on its soil. Colombia’s government also favors public health approaches over militarized solutions.
