Covid Variants Nimbus and Stratus Are Rising Rapidly — Plus Some Uncommon Symptoms

A hoarse voice and an intensely painful, ‘razor blade’ sore throat are identified as distinctive symptoms of the newest Covid variants, Stratus (XFB) and Nimbus (NB.1.8.1). These strains are driving a significant increase in infections across Britain and the United States, with cases having doubled since August.

Health officials in the UK have initiated a winter vaccination campaign in response to rising hospital admissions. Data from the UK Health Security Agency shows a rise in positivity rates and hospitalizations. In the US, wastewater data indicates moderate national spread, though several states are reporting very high levels of the virus.

According to infectious disease expert Dr. Aaron Glatt, the severe sore throat is a common complaint among patients with the current variants. He described the sensation as feeling like the throat is covered in razor blades. However, the variants also continue to cause more familiar symptoms like headaches, coughs, and fatigue.

Experts emphasize that these new strains are not more dangerous than previous ones but are more transmissible due to genetic mutations. While free Covid tests are no longer available on the NHS, they can be purchased from pharmacies.

The UKHSA advises symptomatic individuals to stay home if possible and avoid contact with vulnerable people. For those who must go out, wearing a face covering is recommended to reduce the spread of the infection.

Eligible groups for the winter Covid booster include over-75s, those with weakened immune systems, and care home residents. Pregnant women and children are also being invited for vaccinations, with private jabs available at some pharmacies for a fee.

This surge in cases follows a controversial study from South Korea that claimed a potential link between Covid vaccines and cancer risk. However, experts have widely dismissed the findings, stating there is no credible evidence to support such a connection.
