Supreme Court OK’s Trump Admin’s Resumption of Immigration Sweeps In LA

The Supreme Court has granted a significant victory to President Trump’s immigration policy. The ruling allows ICE to proceed with planned mass deportation operations in Los Angeles.

This decision temporarily suspends earlier rulings from lower courts. Those courts had found that ICE violated the Constitution by using race, ethnicity, and language as factors in immigration stops.

Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh wrote the opinion, stating that while ethnicity cannot be the sole reason for a stop, it can be considered a “relevant factor” when combined with other circumstances. He argued that such a combination can provide “reasonable suspicion” of illegal presence.

The Trump administration had argued that the lower court rulings were hindering its deportation strategy. The decision is a major endorsement of the government’s enforcement approach.

Los Angeles became the central focus of this crackdown in June, when additional federal agents were deployed. The operations sparked riots across the city.

In response to the unrest, President Trump federalized and deployed National Guard troops and U.S. Marines. This move itself prompted new legal challenges concerning presidential powers.

The core of the case revolves around the standards for immigration stops. A lower court judge had issued an injunction, finding that ICE was targeting people for speaking Spanish or visiting car washes, which she ruled violated the Fourth Amendment. The Supreme Court’s stay overturns that injunction for now.
