CHICAGO ROCKED BY HOLIDAY
A violent Labor Day weekend in Chicago resulted in at least 54 people being shot. Seven of these shooting victims were killed, according to police reports.
The police indicated that most of these shooting incidents were not connected to each other. Due to their isolated nature, few arrests have been made in connection with the violence.
The seven fatalities included two women and three men. The other two individuals who were killed have not yet been publicly identified.
In a significant political response, Mayor Brandon Johnson signed an executive order. This order prevents Chicago police from cooperating with federal law enforcement authorities.
The mayor’s action was a direct rejection of President Trump’s proposal to send federal troops or agents to the city. Mayor Johnson has pledged to challenge any such federal deployment through the legal system.
The White House responded by accusing Democratic leaders of politicizing the issue of crime. The administration argued that local officials should focus on addressing the violence itself.
So far this year, Chicago has reported a total of 272 homicides. This recent weekend’s violence contributes to that ongoing toll.
