RFK Jr claims circumcised boys are more likely to be autistic – here’s why

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is once again drawing controversy—this time for reviving his long-debunked claim that Tylenol may cause autism. During a recent Cabinet meeting with Donald Trump and other officials, Kennedy repeated the theory, admitting there’s no proof but insisting new studies are underway.

Just weeks earlier, Trump and Kennedy had hinted at a supposed discovery linking painkillers taken during pregnancy to autism in children. Scientists and health organizations quickly rejected the claim, emphasizing there is no causal evidence between acetaminophen and autism. Tylenol’s manufacturer and the National Autistic Society both condemned the remarks as misleading and harmful.

Former president Barack Obama also criticized the administration’s handling of health messaging, warning that spreading false medical theories could erode public trust and harm families.

At the meeting, Kennedy reportedly told Trump that “anyone who takes the stuff during pregnancy unless they have to is irresponsible,” adding that the administration was “doing the studies to make the proof.” His comments were met with ridicule after he incorrectly said a woman was “gobbling Tylenol with a baby in her placenta.”

Kennedy went further, repeating another discredited idea—that infant circumcision doubles autism rates because babies are given Tylenol afterward. The theory misuses a 2015 Danish study, which showed a correlation, not causation, and didn’t examine painkiller use.

Health experts warn that Kennedy’s claims risk legitimizing pseudoscience, especially coming from a top health official. Many now question whether spreading such misinformation should be considered free speech—or a public responsibility violation.
