Charlotte Tragedy: Ukrainian Refugee’s Dream Cut Short
Iryna Zarutska, a 23-year-old Ukrainian refugee, moved to North Carolina seeking a fresh start. Fleeing war with her mother and siblings, she quickly became a cherished member of her new community. She balanced multiple jobs, took English lessons, and aspired to work as a veterinary assistant.

Tragedy struck on August 22, 2025. After a long shift at a Charlotte pizzeria, Iryna boarded a light-rail train, unaware of the danger awaiting her.
Authorities report that Decarlos Brown Jr., a man with a criminal history, suddenly attacked her. Surveillance footage indicates the two had never met, amplifying the shock and sorrow surrounding her death.
Police apprehended Brown at the next station. He faces first-degree murder charges, while federal officials are investigating other potential crimes on public transit. Despite the swift response, the community remains deeply shaken.
Over a hundred people attended Iryna’s funeral, celebrating her determination and generosity.
