Bruna Ferreira, the mother of White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt\u2019s nephew, was detained by ICE in November. The Brazilian-born Massachusetts resident was held for 26 days, fearing deportation to a country she left as a child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ferreira was apprehended while on her way to pick up her 11-year-old son. She was taken to a detention center in Louisiana, over 1,500 miles away, before an immigration judge ordered her release on bond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She has since publicly criticized Karoline Leavitt. In a CNN interview, Ferreira questioned Leavitt\u2019s compassion, stating, \u201cYou\u2019re a mother, and you should know. How would you feel if somebody did this to you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ferreira claims she has not spoken to Leavitt and cannot see her son since her release. She is also required to wear a GPS ankle monitor, restricting her to her home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The White House issued a statement, saying the child has always lived full-time with his father, Ferreira\u2019s ex-partner Michael Leavitt. It noted Ferreira and the press secretary have not spoken in years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson labeled Ferreira a \u201ccriminal illegal alien,\u201d citing an alleged battery arrest and an expired tourist visa. Ferreira and her attorney deny any criminal history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
